MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Sept. 26, 2012) — “Measured by Brush Marks,” an exhibition featuring the work of artist David Knoecklein, opens Monday, Oct. 1, in the Milligan College Art Gallery, located in the lower level of Derthick Hall.
The exhibit will remain open through Oct. 27. A reception for the artist will be held during Milligan’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
Knoecklein, who taught art, humanities and communications at Milligan from 1985 to 1991, uses art to represent the different interests he has had throughout his career. His art ranges from abstract to landscapes, and includes drawings and even portraits. Most of his pieces in the exhibit are tributes to the people who have shaped him as an artist and a person.
“In this exhibition, ‘Measured by Brush Marks,’ the paintings and drawing represent my gifts,” Knoecklein said. “I have desired to be alive in mind, body and soul so that my artwork has vitality.”
Method and technique pique Knoecklein’s interest when he works.
“I visited museums and looked carefully at different artists’ work using independent study as fuel for exploration,” he said. “I found great joy in the research and discovery involved in much of the work of this exhibition.”
Knoecklein has taught art at Phoenix Village Art Center; Chester Springs Studio; Illinois State University; Genesis Gallery in Mill Valley, Calif.; and the Cottonwood Art Academy and the Colorado Springs Conservatory, both in Colorado Springs, Colo. He currently resides near Philadelphia, where he teaches in his own studio.
