MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 24, 2013) — Milligan College and Emmanuel Christian Seminary have announced that they will enter into a management contract effective July 1.
The contract will allow Milligan personnel to provide a range of administrative and support services to Emmanuel, including finance, admissions, information technology and physical plant.
“This contract will bring the institutions closer together than ever before,” said Milligan President Bill Greer. “The intent of this agreement is to move closer to a full integration of the two schools by maximizing operational efficiency and effectiveness.”
Greer also announced that constructive talks regarding Emmanuel’s full integration with Milligan continue. Greer and Emmanuel President Mike Sweeney, along with their administrative teams, meet regularly to discuss plans and associated issues that arise as progress is made toward Emmanuel becoming part of Milligan.
Prior to the management contract, Milligan and Emmanuel have operated independently but have a strong shared history, since Emmanuel was founded in 1965 using shared space on the Milligan campus and under the leadership of then-president Dr. Dean E. Walker. Both institutions are part of the Stone-Campbell Movement and have a similar mission of preparing men and women for ministry and servant-leadership.
Financial and economic conditions have been difficult for Emmanuel in recent years, which led Emmanuel’s board and president in summer 2012 to begin discussions with Milligan about some sort of operating relationship. Since then, both institutions have been in a period of due diligence to explore the options and determine if such a relationship would be in the best interest of both parties.
“Our mutual commitment is to honor and continue Emmanuel’s legacy by continuing to offer academically-sound, advanced degrees in Bible and ministry,” said Greer. “We agree that Emmanuel and Milligan can do this best together as one institution with one united mission and operational structure. We are excited about the future possibilities and the great advantages this will offer to students at both schools.”
